SUMMARY:Bethlehem Steel Locomotive Experience
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Industrial History is excited to offer a hands-on train engineer experience on its restored narrow gauge locomotive! Situated in the museum’s park area\, the 1941 Whitcomb diesel-electric locomotive was used at Bethlehem Steel in the Electric Furnace Melt Shop where it moved trains of scrap metal. Restored by museum volunteers and staff to working condition\, the train operates on a little over 100 feet of demonstration track. During this educational experience participants will be able to climb into the cab\, learn how the locomotive works\, then take the controls under the supervision of museum personnel. The short but memorable runs will let you step back in time\, putting you in the same engineer’s seat as the steelworkers who helped build the country.\nEach experience is limited to two adults or one adult and one child. Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes and is weather-dependent. Tickets are $30 per session (includes 1-2 participants) and are non-refundable except in the case of inclement weather or cancellation by the museum.\nLearn more about the locomotive’s restoration process and see it in action here: https://www.nmih.org/restoration-highlight-1941-bethlehem-steel-whitcomb-narrow-gauge-locomotive\nBecause of the nature of operating historic equipment\, availability is subject to change without advance notice. Every reasonable effort will be made to keep your experience on track. Guests must be able to climb four steps to enter and exit the locomotive.  NMIH’s Bethlehem Steel locomotive experience is separate from regular museum admission.\nBOOK YOUR TIMESLOT FOR THE 2024 SEASON\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\n2024 Season Dates – First and Third Sundays April through October\nApril 7th & 21th\nMay 5th & 19th\nJune 2nd & 16th\nJuly 7th & 21st\nAugust 4th & 18th\nSeptember 1st & 15th\nOctober 6th & 20th\nTO PURCHASE TICKETS FOR FIRST SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH CLICK HERE.\nTO PURCHASE TICKETS FOR THIRD SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH CLICK HERE.\nTO PURCHASE TICKETS FOR MAY 19th\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:THEATRE: "The Oscars: A Conversation Among Friends" by John Thompson
DESCRIPTION:The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts (Charter Arts) Theatre Department presents a fall season of dynamic original plays .Playing host to these premieres is an important and distinct honor for a high school theatre program.  Artistic Director\, Kelly Minner-Bickert shares: “We pride ourselves on offering something that is different from other high school theatre programs in the Lehigh Valley. In addition to the extensive training they receive here our students are given the rare opportunity to work with playwrights\, composers and other artists at the forefront of the theatre movement in the creation of new works.” \nThe season kicks off with a production of “The Oscars: A Conversation Among Friends” by John Thompson\, September 6-8. 2024. Oscar Wilde\, a famously complex man\, invites you into an evening of conversation between five different versions of himself- the young poet\, the mature storyteller\, the jaded playwright\, the sorrowful prisoner\, and the weary exile. The conversational jousting between the Oscars brings alive the arc of Wilde’s life and follows his search for a way to recover himself as the artist of his own life. \nThis production is directed by Kelly Minner-Bickert and features an exceptional cast that includes students\, alumni and community artists. “All of the artists involved in this project have diligently committed to taking the intimate conversation among the 5 Wildes and turn it into a transcendent spiritual experience of self reflection and hopefully\, discovery for the audience as well. As Wilde questions his choices and the world’s view of them\, he also challenges the audience (who will be seated around the actors as part of the action) to do likewise. Playwright John Thompson\, in his first play\, has crafted a piece of such raw emotional text (often using WIlde’s own words) where the famed wit\, dandy\, playwright peels back the layers of himself to unmask how his desires\, his vanity\, his genius\, his suffering\, and his mistakes led him on the ultimate search to embrace all of his identities and rediscover who is Oscar Wilde?” \nEvening performances on September 6 & 7 at 7 PM. SUMMARY:THEATRE: "The Oscars: A Conversation Among Friends" by John Thompson
DESCRIPTION:BETHLEHEM\, PA—The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts (Charter Arts) Theatre Department is excited to present a series of original plays written by new as well as seasoned professional playwrights as part of its 2024-2025 season.   \nPlaying host to these premieres is an important and distinct honor for a high school theatre program.  Artistic Director\, Kelly Minner-Bickert shares: “We pride ourselves on offering something that is different from other high school theatre programs in the Lehigh Valley. In addition to the extensive training they receive here our students are given the rare opportunity to work with playwrights\, composers and other artists at the forefront of the theatre movement in the creation of new works.”  \nThe season will kick off with the premiere of The Oscars: A Conversation Among Friends by John Thompson\, September 6-8. 2024. In this beautifully constructed story\, Oscar Wilde\, a famously complex man\, invites you into an evening of conversation between five different versions of himself- the young poet\, the mature storyteller\, the jaded playwright\, the sorrowful prisoner\, and the weary exile. The conversational jousting between the Oscars brings alive the arc of Wilde’s life and follows his search for a way to recover himself as the artist of his own life. \nThis production is directed by Kelly Minner-Bickert and features an exceptional cast that includes students\, alumni and community artists. “All of the artists involved in this project have diligently committed to taking the intimate conversation among the 5 Wildes and turn it into a transcendent spiritual experience of self reflection and hopefully\, discovery for the audience as well\,” says Minner-Bickert.  “As Wilde questions his choices and the world’s view of them\, he also challenges the audience (who will be seated around the actors as part of the action) to do likewise. Matinee performance on September 8 at 2 PM. Tickets are General Admission seating in the Black Box Theatre: $12 Adult\, $7 Student/Child. Tickets can be purchased in advance at CharterArts.org.  \nABOUT THE CHARTER ARTS THEATRE DEPARTMENT: \nThe Charter Arts Theatre Department offers a pre-professional training program for high school-aged performers. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Public Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Self-Taught Artists and the National Identity” with Katherine Jentleson\, PhD\nThursday\, September 12\, 5:30-6:30 PM \nBlack Box Theater\, Zoellner Arts Center \nPublic Reception to Follow\, 6:30-8:00 PM \nLUAG Main & Lower Galleries\, Zoellner Arts Center \nLUAG is proud to host the traveling exhibition\, Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe\, curated by Katherine Jentleson PhD.\, the Merrie and Dan Boone Curator of Folk and Self-Taught Art at the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta. In her discussion\, Dr. Jentleson will present Rowe’s practice in the context of developments that shaped the United States’ social climate\, both nationally and locally\, during a lifetime that spanned most of the twentieth century. These include the influence of the US civil rights movement of the 1960s\, the rise of the Feminist movement\, the disruptions of predatory urban expansion and Black removal\, all consciously referenced and transmuted into the endogenous spiritual home ground of her art. \nAdvanced RSVP is appreciated\, but not required.  \nThis is a qualifying 5X10 event.\nThe 5×10\, which reads as five by ten\, is a programming series open to all Lehigh students with a specific focus on first-year students\, their connection to Lehigh and introducing them to bLUeprint and the Five Foundations of Student Success. In a typical year\, first-year students are expected to attend five programs during the first ten weeks of the semester.\n\n\n\nKatherineJentlesonGallery1_TedPioRodaPhotography_092023-1024×1024.jpg\n\n\n\n\nKatherine “Katie” Jentleson\, PhD\, is the Merrie and Dan Boone Curator of Folk and Self-Taught Art at the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta. Her most recent exhibitions\, Gatecrashers: The Rise of the Self-Taught Artist in America and Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe\, opened to the public in Atlanta in fall 2021 and began national tours in 2022. Since joining the High\, she has overseen more than half a dozen exhibitions and grown the collection by more than five hundred objects\, including major acquisitions of work by Thornton Dial\, Lonnie Holley\, the Gee’s Bend quilters\, and Henry Church\, many of which debuted in the newly expanded and thematically integrated Folk and Self-Taught Art galleries as part of the Museum’s 2018 reinstallation. Her exhibitions and collection-based initiatives have been awarded major support from Bank of America\, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Art Bridges Foundation\, and the Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Foundation. \nBefore she became a curator\, Dr. Jentleson worked as an arts journalist in New York. Through her editorial assignments and general experiences at galleries and museums there\, she discovered her passion for self-taught artists and their historical legacy in the United States. In 2010\, she began her graduate studies in art history at Duke University\, where she focused her research on the rise of self-taught artists during the interwar period. During her graduate career she received awards and fellowships from the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, the Archives of American Art\, and the Dedalus Foundation\, and she contributed research and writing to exhibitions at the American Folk Art Museum\, the Ackland Art Museum\, the Nasher Museum of Art\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, and Prospect.3 New Orleans. Dr. Jentleson adapted her dissertation into a peer-reviewed book Gatecrashers: The Rise of the Self-Taught Artist in America (University of California Press\, Spring 2020) and the High Museum of Art’s 2021 exhibition of the same name. \n\n  \nAn ASL interpreter will be in attendance to interpret the lecture and will be available as a floating interpreter for the duration of the opening reception. \nCART Captioning will be available for the lecture portion of the evening. Provided by Becky Tallerico. \nQuestions\, concerns\, and any accessibility needs can also be directed to Elise at ejs421@lehigh.edu or call 610-758-6882. \n  \n\n\nASL-Icon-300×300.png\n\n\n\n\n\nOpen_Captioning_1.jpg\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Sonny Landreth in a Rare Solo Performance: A TUESDAY NIGHT SHOW!
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, SEPTEMBER 17 \, 7PM\n$43.50 ADVANCE | $48.50 DAY OF SHOW\nhttps://godfreydaniels.org/event/sonny-landreth-rare-solo-performance-slide-guitar-september-17-2024/\nGodfrey Daniels is thrilled to welcome Sonny Landreth to our stage for a rare solo performance on a Tuesday night!  As a two-time Grammy nominee and master of the slide guitar\, Mr. Landreth’s innovative techniques and boundary-breaking style promise an unforgettable evening of music. Mark your calendars and join us for this special event!\nNew frontiers fit nicely atop the boundary-breaking career of singer-songwriter and slide guitar icon Sonny Landreth. From performing live with Buddy Guy and John Hiatt in theaters and arenas around the United States\, to post-New Orleans Jazz Fest jamming on bayou rhythms with Oteil Burbridge and Johnny Vidacovich\, to recording and playing live with ukulele phenom Jake Shimabukuro at The Blue Note in Hawaii\, it’s been a noteworthy couple of years for the twotime Grammy nominee. And those are just his side projects.\n“One of the things I love about collaborations with other artists is the element of surprise\,” Landreth says of his continually expanding musical horizons. “When the chemistry is there\, it’s always inspiring to find new twists and turns that up the game creatively.”\nLandreth tours regularly in a duo with fellow slide guitar ace Cindy Cashdollar as well as with his own electric and acoustic trio. From every edition of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival to Wintergrass to Camp Cripple Creek for Jim Weider’s The Weight Band and beyond\, Landreth and his musical partners are always reaching for the unexpected and unexplored. He’s twice graced the cover of Guitar Player magazine\, and he’s featured on the lead track of Shemekia Copeland’s Grammy-nominated album Done Come Too Far.\nStretching in different directions\, Landreth says\, “gives you a broader perspective – and I think that impacts every aspect of making music. I know it’s helped to make our shows more memorable and more fun for everyone onstage and in the audience too.”

SUMMARY:Notations: Luis Miranda\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Free; No Tickets Required\n\n\n\n\n\nA veteran of New York and national politics\, Luis Miranda embodies the relentless spirit of progress of American immigrants. In Relentless\, he shares a fascinating narrative of his life and career-from his early days as a radically minded Puerto Rican activist to his decades of political advice and problem-solving. Miranda recounts the thrill of the ascendency of Hamilton\, created by his son Lin-Manuel\, and he details the suffering after the devastation of Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria. Amid the triumphs and challenges\, Miranda examines what his experience reveals about our ever-changing politics\, demographics\, and society.

SUMMARY:Identity: What Color are You? Workshop with Siona Benjamin
DESCRIPTION:Join visiting artist Siona Benjamin for a hands-on workshop that explores identity. Siona will start off the workshop by telling participants the story of how she became blue and also about growing Jewish in India. Participants will then be asked to think about what color they see themselves. SUMMARY:Metal Health: A Veteran Focused Hands-On Iron Art Casting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, September 20th\, from 10 AM to 2 PM\, NMIH will host a workshop led by Veteran and artist Jay Elias of Evolution Art Studios. Elias\, a former United States Marine\, served during the Gulf War era. Suffering from undiagnosed and untreated PTSD\, he wound up on the wrong side of the law and eventually served a lengthy prison sentence. After many years of gradually declining mental health\, he discovered the healing effects that art and the creative process can provide to promote both spiritual and emotional wellness. He created Evolution Art Studio to share this holistic approach to healing with other veterans and members of the community alike. \nThe workshop will introduce the process used to create three-dimensional sculptural forms in cast iron —patternmaking\, mold-making and casting. The workshop includes instruction in the use of pattern materials. Most participants make their patterns from several pre-made forms. Workshop participants can customize their own design to these existing forms\, making them unique\, or build entirely from scratch using techniques demonstrated during the workshop. \nOn Saturday\, September 21st at 7pm\, a public iron pour demonstration will take place outdoors in the Museum’s Foundry Park (weather permitting) with the participation of workshop registrants. Whether they attended the workshop the day before or not\, anyone from the public is invited to watch the pour\, where scrap iron will be recycled and melted down in a visually stunning process of fire and molten metal. After cooling down from 2700 degrees Fahrenheit\, the resulting cast iron sculptures and objects will be on exhibit for the general public on Sunday\, September 22nd during Steel Weekend before their makers bring them home. \nAll activities will take place outdoors at the National Museum of Industrial History\, located on the grounds of the former Bethlehem\, PA\, plant of Bethlehem Steel. \nParticipants must be prepared to work with sand and wear safety glasses. Anyone who has their own safety glasses is welcome to bring them. Limited quantities will be available on site. \nSpace is limited and registration is required. Free for veterans\, $40 for general public. Children must be accompanied by an adult.  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Alash – Masters of Tuvan Throat Singing
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 21 • 8PM\nAlash – Masters of Tuvan Throat Singing\n$28.50 ADVANCE | $33.50 DAY OF SHOW\nhttps://godfreydaniels.org/event/alash-tuvan-throat-singers-september-21-2024/\nAlash are masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the ancient art of throat singing\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve\, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with Western elements\, creating their unique style that is fresh and new\, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage.\nWhat does throat singing sound like? “Imagine a human bagpipe — a person who could sing a sustained low note while humming an eerie\, whistle-like melody. For good measure\, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp\, but produced vocally-by the same person\, at the same time.”— Newsweek (March 17\, 2006)\nWhere is Tuva? Tuva (sometimes spelled Tyva) sits at the southern edge of Siberia\, with Mongolia to its south. Over the centuries\, Tuva has been part of Chinese and Mongolian empires\, and shares many cultural ties with Mongolia. In 1944 it became part of the USSR\, and until the late physicist Richard Feynman drew attention to it\, was largely unknown to Westerners. The Republic of Tuva is now part of the Russian Federation.

SUMMARY:Another Point of View: 4 Visually Impaired Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission presents an invitational exhibition: “Another Point of View: 4 Visually Impaired Artists” that highlights the work of  Mary Ann Dunwoodie\, Michael Freeman\, Dianne Michels\, and Terry Newhard at the Bethlehem Town Hall Rotunda Gallery from September 30 to November 4\, 2024.  The exhibition brings together 4 visually impaired artisans with varying degrees of vision who use their personal creative process as a means of self expression and inspiration. The goal is to bring together members of the sighted community with these talented artisans. While their sight may have darkened and somewhat dimmed\, all of these artists have a visionary quest which shows no limits and takes us forward into the light. “This exhibit will allow the community to expand its imagination on the subject and medium of each work of art\, much like many exhibits do\,” Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds stated\, “but it will also expand our imagination on what is possible when we challenge the idea of what ‘disability’ allows us\, or does not allow us\, to create.”  \nThere will be an artist reception on Sunday\, October 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.  The Rotunda Gallery is located at 10 E. Church Street.  Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. \nThe exhibition is sponsored by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (www.bfac-lv.org) and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
