SUMMARY:Bethlehem Town Hall Rotunda Gallery\, Frank "Wyso" Wysochansky\, paintings\, Christmas in Bethlehem
DESCRIPTION:Northeastern Pennsylvania artist\, Frank “Wyso” Wysochansky’s art work will be exhibited at the Bethlehem Town Hall Rotunda Gallery from November 9 to December 19\, 2025.  Titled “Christmas in Bethlehem” this exhibition of  the posthumous artist\, known as “Wyso”\, is curated by Steven J. Lichak.  There will be an opening reception on Sunday\, November 9\, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM\, with an artist talk at 3:00 PM.  The Rotunda Gallery is located at 10 E. Church Street.  Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. \nFrank “Wyso” Wysochansky (1915–1994) was self-taught\, fiercely prolific\, and unapologetically human.  From the coal fields of Pennsylvania to the walls of American galleries\, Frank Wysochansky—known simply as WYSO®—created a body of work that speaks to the grit\, faith\, and resilience of the working class. Born to Ukrainian immigrants and one of twelve children\, Wyso’s life was steeped in the struggles of miners and their families. When his father was killed in a mining accident\, that experience seared into his soul—and into his art. \nWyso left school after the seventh grade and began a long career as a freelance cartoonist\, most notably for the United Mine Workers Journal (1946–1969). But his artistic expression didn’t stop with ink. Using everything from watercolor\, pen and ink and Crayola crayons\, he developed a vibrant\, multi-media style that captured everyday life with raw emotion and uncanny vision. \n  \nWyso’s subjects reflect his roots: miners\, immigrant families\, religious devotion\, and the Pennsylvania landscape. But his voice was always universal—a storyteller of the common man\, capturing the soul of America through the eyes of those too often overlooked. Today\, WYSO®’s legacy lives on through exhibitions\, media features\, and the work of the WYSO® Foundation in Bethlehem\, PA. \nThis exhibition is curated by Steven J. Lichak who is a media professional and cultural preservationist dedicated to storytelling through both technology and the arts. At Lehigh University\, he serves as Senior Producer within The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning and the Digital Media Team\, where he creates educational media and mentors the next generation of filmmakers and content creators. \nLichak is also the founding president and curator of the WYSO® Foundation\, established to preserve and share the work of Frank Wysochansky (WYSO®)\, the self-taught artist from Pennsylvania who produced more than 5\,000 works. A personal friend of the artist\, Lichak undertook the cataloging of Wyso’s collection after his death in 1994. Thanks to his efforts\, Wyso’s once-hidden body of work has been brought into public view\, gaining exhibitions and national recognition as a vital contribution to American folk art. Through his media work\, teaching\, and curatorial projects\, Lichak continues to bridge education\, creativity\, and cultural heritage.
