SUMMARY:Through March 31st - 15th Annual Hope & Healing Juried Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Art is a window of hope when an actual window is not possible\nHigh school and college students are invited to create art that inspires healing and hopefulness and donate it to Healing Through The Arts (HTTA). Following the gallery show located in the lobby area\, all art is available free to any hospital\, doctors’ office\, clinic\, or healing facility to inspire patients\, families\, and staff. After 14 years\, HTTA has placed art in more than 40 hospitals and healing facilities.\nStudents create art to help others\, however\, the process of creating the art also helps themselves. They have the opportunity to explore their own creativity and share their own journey. This process is essential at a time that mental health issues are growing. Research shows that nature images are calming and healing to most people.\nLast year’s 14th annual show featured art from 11 high schools and 6 colleges. Students participated individually or with their class and donated 144 pieces of individual art for the gallery show\, including two participants now art educators who submitted pieces with their high school classes. A total of 34 awards were given this year\, the most this show has ever had. There are five judges’ awards with cash prizes ranging from $500-$150. Community Awards are selected by anyone who wants to honor the student work that speaks personally to them and fund the prize. Eighteen students won the $100 prize this year. Additionally\, The Baum School of Art awarded 10 students with scholarships.\nArt shows that life is beautiful and opens the mind to new possibilities by creating optimism. Familiar scenes bring back memories. Unfamiliar ones can create a sense of wonder or desire to see more. As art emotionally draws the viewer into the picture\, it can be a welcome distraction from the pain of recovery and boredom for patients and caregivers.\nSelect artwork from all the Hope & Healing Juried Art Shows are used to create Healing Art Meditations. These single-song mini meditations combine inspiring images and soothing music from Jim Brickman and other acclaimed artists who support the work of HTTA. Meditations can be viewed from HTTA.org on any device\, anywhere\, anytime.\nHealing Through The Arts (HTTA.org) provides instructions and guidance for creating art that is healing. Lehigh University’s College of Health is a leader in improving human health outcomes through interdisciplinary studies and research in population and community health and health innovation and technology. Healing Through The Arts is proud of this partnership.\nThis exhibition is presented in partnership with the Lehigh University Art Galleries for the planning\, installation\, and exhibition programming.

SUMMARY:Thomas Shillea and Doug Zucco: “Artists and Teachers” exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Shillea\, photographer\, and Doug Zucco\, printmaker\, will be exhibiting a joint exhibition entitled  “Artists and Teachers” at the Bethlehem Town Hall Rotunda Gallery from February 23 to April 1\, 2025.  This exhibition will focus on these two creative forces and their duality as both artists and educators \, emphasizing their impact within our arts community. There will be an artist reception on Sunday\, February 23 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM with an artist talk at 3:00 PM.  The Rotunda Gallery is located at 10 E. Church Street.  Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. \nFor five decades\, Thomas Shillea has focused on the complex interaction of identity that include constructs like gender\, sexuality\, race\, ethnicity\, religion\, and aesthetics. A pioneer in experimental photography\, he also employs a classical approach to his art using his 100-year-old large format view camera and printing his unique images  on paper hand-coated with metals like platinum and gold. He has also created commissioned portraits of public figures such as  President Ronald Reagan\, Coretta Scott King\, and Malcolm Forbes\, to name a few. Most recently\, he participated internationally at  Paris Photo in France and The Photography Show at the Park Avenue Armory\, NYC.  His work has been collected by the Smithsonian Museum\, National Portrait Gallery\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, National Museum of African American History and Culture\,  James A. Michener Art Museum\, and others.  Beside establishing an illustrious art career\, he brings his wealth of knowledge to his students as art professor and concurrently serves as Director of Arts Program at  Northampton Community College in Bethlehem\, Pennsylvania. \nWorking alongside Shillea at the college is his talented colleague\,  Doug Zucco. This artist/teacher is a well-known master printmaker with degrees from Kutztown University and the University of Georgia.  He has previously taught at Kutztown University\, Moravian University\, Cedar Crest College. and presently\, at Northampton Community College.  Zucco has received grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Ford Foundation.  His artwork incorporates symbols\, allegory\, and myth. With his imagery becoming a visual iconography back through time\,  Zucco’s interest in history prompts him to think in layers of meaning and alternative symbolic meanings. Using the  recognizable imagery of a modern deck of playing cards as his inspiration for this show\, he takes the ordinary and makes it iconic\, creating their own compelling mythology. Zucco exhibits his artwork extensively throughout the United States.  In 2023\,  his artwork was on display at the National Museum in Romania. He is currently represented in the collections of The Pew Charitable Trust\, the Philadelphia Public Library\, Muhlenberg College\, the Delaware Art Museum\, and the Getty Museum\, among others. \nThe joint exhibition is sponsored by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (www.bfac-lv.org) and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. \nEVENT CALENDAR:  \nBethlehem Town Hall Rotunda Gallery \n10 E. SUMMARY:Mid-Week Lenten Dinners & Programs
DESCRIPTION:Mid-Week Lenten Program\n“Full to the Brim: Envisioning\, Creating\, \nand Sustaining Community– \nLiving with Abundance in a World of Scarcity” \nFull to the Brim will use beautiful liturgies\, art and poetry\nfrom Sanctified Art following the Sunday morning’s\nlectionary readings. This year’s Lenten Scripture are filled\nwith parables and promises of God’s abundant and expansive\ngrace; Jesus as a mother hen\, a prodigal son welcomed home\,\na fig tree nurtured with care and hope\, precious oil poured out\nlovingly and freely\, stones shouting out with praise.\nSanctified Art writes about this series\, “We’ve done nothing\nto deserve or earn this grace\, and yet\, like water\, it spills over.\nFull to the Brim is an invitation — into a radically different\nLent\, into a full life. It’s an invitation to be authentically\nwho you are\, to counter scarcity and injustice at every\nturn\, to pour out even more grace wherever it is needed. It\ndisrupts the scarcity mentality that capitalism\, oppression\, or\nhierarchy can plant inside of us. When we allow ourselves to\nbe filled to the brim with God’s lavish love\, that love spills\nover into everything we touch. . . .\nThis Lent\, let us trust — fully — that we belong to God.\nLet us increase our capacity to receive and give grace.\nLet us discover the expansive life God dreams for us”. \nAsh Wednesday & Mid-Week Lenten Dinner & Programs\nMarch 5\, 12\, 19\, 26\, April 2\, 9 \n6 p.m. Dinner\, 7 p.m. Worship and Program\nChristian Education building\, 40 W. Church Street\, lower level \nOur cup is full! How does our history and contemporary\nexamples of building community remind us of God’s\nexpansive love and grace for this world. \nMarch 5: Ash Wednesday Worship (Old Chapel – 7 p.m.)\nMeal (6 p.m.\, CE building)\, Sacristans \nMarch 12: Building Community in New Ways: The story\nof Essentials Café and YouBelong Ministries\nMeal: Essentials Café (sponsored by the Busy Workers) \nMarch 19: Strength from Community: 18th century Single\nSisters’ House. Dr. Scott Gordon.\nMeal: Social Action Committee and its teams \nMarch 26: Singing Together: Hymns of Community and\nSacred Connection\nMeal: Choirs of Central \nApril 2: Board of World Mission – New Leadership:\nWhere is BWM leading in our communities and the\nworld? SUMMARY:MUSICAL: "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"
DESCRIPTION:The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts will delight audiences with its production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee\, March 20-23\, 2025. This fun musical comedy tells the heartfelt tale of six awkward spelling champions who learn that winning (and losing) isn’t everything. \nThe Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts (Charter Arts) will delight audiences with its production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee\, Music & Lyrics by William Finn\, Book By Rachel Sheinkin\, Conceived by Rebecca Feldman\, March 20-23\, 2025.  The show is presented by the school’s production arts department in collaboration with the theatre\, vocal\, and instrumental music departments.\nThis fun musical comedy follows a group of middle school students as they compete in the title championship\, spelling their way through outrageously complex vocabulary while coming to terms with the stress of competition and their own personal challenges. In the end\, even the most desperate kids are comforted by the possibility of finding a friend who shares in both the pressure and love of competitive spelling.\nThis production features a talented cast of young actors with lead roles played by: Alex Androu\, Fiona Clifford-Fotopoulos\, Jadaline Fontanez\, Simon Garfias\, Rosie Grellet\, Isavel Mendoza\, Andi Schubert\, and Kamai Williams.\nThe show is directed by Diane Wagner with music direction by Erica Dickson\, technical direction by Ellen Schmoyer and choreography by Anelise Rodriguez. The pit orchestra is conducted by Thomas Maher.\nWagner shares: “From my perspective\, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a perfect musical. The book offers a brilliant blend of humor and heart\, and the music follows suit with lively\, hilarious numbers like Magic Foot juxtaposed with the deep yearning of I Love You. It’s been a true joy working on this show with our students. We look forward to sharing it so that others can experience that same feeling.”\nThis production is produced by Brett Mathews with set and lighting design by Ellen Schmoyer\, costume design by Amy Handkammer\, and sound design by Carlo Acerra. The assistant music director is Malāna Wilson and the stage manager is Destiny Williams.\nEvening performances on March 20-22 at 7 PM. Matinee performances on March 23 at 2 PM. Tickets are $12-$17 and are available for purchase online at CharterArts.org. \nThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
