SUMMARY:Another Point of View: 4 Visually Impaired Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission presents an invitational exhibition: “Another Point of View: 4 Visually Impaired Artists” that highlights the work of  Mary Ann Dunwoodie\, Michael Freeman\, Dianne Michels\, and Terry Newhard at the Bethlehem Town Hall Rotunda Gallery from September 30 to November 4\, 2024.  The exhibition brings together 4 visually impaired artisans with varying degrees of vision who use their personal creative process as a means of self expression and inspiration. The goal is to bring together members of the sighted community with these talented artisans. While their sight may have darkened and somewhat dimmed\, all of these artists have a visionary quest which shows no limits and takes us forward into the light. “This exhibit will allow the community to expand its imagination on the subject and medium of each work of art\, much like many exhibits do\,” Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds stated\, “but it will also expand our imagination on what is possible when we challenge the idea of what ‘disability’ allows us\, or does not allow us\, to create.”  \nThere will be an artist reception on Sunday\, October 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.  The Rotunda Gallery is located at 10 E. Church Street.  Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. \nThe exhibition is sponsored by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (www.bfac-lv.org) and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Stories in the Garden: Family Storytime Series with Visiting Storyteller Veronica Moore
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Stories in the Garden\, which takes place weekly on Saturdays at 11 am led by community gardener\, musician\, and artist Nia Watson\, along with guest storytellers on select dates. This series focuses on food sovereignty\, community\, and the arts. \nOver the course of Stories in the Garden programming\, the MLK Garden in South Bethlehem will itself become a sort of “playhouse” for creativity inspired by Nellie’s playhouse in LUAG’s fall exhibition\, Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe. This work will capture community stories through hands-on exploration\, in which community members will assist with working in the garden as well as weave stories\, images\, and ideas into the garden beds. \nRegister in advance to receive updates and more information! \nIf you require assistance to fill out this form or prefer to share your registration information via email or phone\, please email ejs421@lehigh.edu or call 610-758-6882. Questions\, concerns\, and any accessibility needs can also be directed to Elise at ejs421@lehigh.edu or call 610-758-6882. \nFamily Storytimes:\nSaturdays through October 26\,11 am-12 pm on select dates and 4-5 pm August 24 and September 28.\nEach program includes a book reading related to our themes\, engaging learning sessions about garden plants\, and a hands-on activity that ties everything together. \nVisiting Storyteller Sessions: \nOctober 5\, 11 am – Veronica Moore\nOctober 12\, 11 am – Tatiana Moreno\nWhether you’re passionate about gardening\, storytelling\, or community building\, Stories in the Garden offers something for everyone. Don’t miss this chance to explore the intersection of nature\, art\, and community in a beautiful garden setting. \nThis program was made possible in part by Southside Tomorrow\, a 6-year revitalization program of Community Action Development Bethlehem and the City of Bethlehem\, with support from Univest Bank & Trust Co.\, Embassy Bank for the Lehigh Valley\, People’s Security Bank and Trust\, PPL Electric Utilities\, and Provident Bank. \n  \n\n\nnia-waston.jpg\n\n\n\n  \nNia Watson\, Song Poet & Educator\nNia has evolved into her art form over the last six years. Taking journal entries and transforming them into song poems inspired by life experiences. Influenced by nature\, specifically birds\, their flying patterns and songs. She creates other visuals as well when inspired. Nia is also a yoga instructor offering diverse classes to the valley for the past decade. She has taught early childhood since 2009.  Currently\, Nia is in the midst of learning to be a birth worker to support birthing beings themselves and those who are growing within them from conceiving to postpartum. Her classes and community offerings weave all the parts of herself together. Offering movement with a touch of playfulness and songs to soothe everyone present. Nia has performed here in the Valley\, Philadelphia Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro. She hopes to keep learning and growing and sharing the lessons she learns along the way. \n  \n\n\nveronica-moore.jpeg\n\n\n\n  \nVeronica Moore is a celebrated educator\, trainer\, facilitator\, children’s book author and entreprenuer. Her books are based in social and emotional learning principles and can be used as a tool both inside and outside of learning spaces.\n“Rosie’s Special Gift”\, follows the story of Rosie\, a curious young girl\, and her nurturing mother on a captivating journey through the world of plants.\nThrough delightful storytelling and enchanting illustrations\, “Rosie’s Special Gift” showcases the unique bond between a mother and daughter as they explore the wonders of gardening and taking care of plants together. As they tend to their growing green things\, Rosie and her mom uncover lessons about kindness\, generosity\, and the importance of community. This heartwarming tale not only celebrates the joy of nurturing plants and growing food\, but it also shows the timeless love shared between mothers and daughters. “Rosie’s Special Gift” is a tender and inspiring read that will leave young readers and caregivers with a lasting appreciation for the magic and power of nature. SUMMARY:Kinetic Light: DESCENT
DESCRIPTION:Kinetic Light\, an innovative disability arts ensemble\, is globally acclaimed for its immersive\, accessible approach. Led by disabled artists\, the ensemble creates\, designs\, and performs work that is a thrilling blend of movement\, light and sound. Their creations speak to and emerge from disability aesthetics and culture. This connection to the rich traditions and contemporary conversations of disabled artists in all artistic fields makes Kinetic Light’s work a powerful\, intersectional creative force. \nKinetic Light’s DESCENT is presented in partnership with Touchstone Theatre and their community arts initiative Festival UnBound OCT 3-6. For information on Festival events\, its history\, and the 2024 sponsors\, visit here. \nDESCENT explores the pleasures of wheeled movement and reckless abandon. It is performed on a custom-designed architectural ramp installation with hills\, curves\, and peaks. Combining dance\, architecture\, design\, and technology\, this work challenges cultural assumptions of what disability\, dance and beauty can be. Inspired by the sensual writings and art of French sculptor Auguste Rodin\, DESCENT gives the mythological characters of Venus and Andromeda new life as interracial lovers. Voted as 2018’s most moving performance by the readers of Dance Magazine\, DESCENT is “An ingenious set of ramps [that] serves as a canvas for projections of stars and seas\, and as a surface for wheelchair motion with the gliding grace of ice dance\,” according to The New Yorker. \n**Per Kinetic Light’s touring practices\, masks are required for this performance. For the safety of the performing artists and audience\, all audience members\, ushers\, and staff are required to be masked upon entering the venue and throughout the performance. Thank you to Lehigh Valley Health Network for their support.  \nAccess: This performance is expected to include haptic interpretation of sound scores; ASL interpreters; audio description through Kinetic Light’s Audimance app; expanded accessible seating; tactile lobby experiences; sensory kits; a quiet space; and exit and entry welcome during performances. Please call the box office at 610-758-2787 x0 for ASL and haptic seating. Click HERE to learn more about our accessible seating project. Thank you to The Dexter F. and Dorothy H.
